Renato “Bicolano Man” Jao: A Proud Magayon Ambassador

for the Best pinoy advocate category

“The most beautiful volcano in the country - [anyone] would love to see Mayon.”

Bicolano Man, whose real name is Renato Jao, is a simple yet proud Magayon who had been making waves in anything and everything related to Bicol.

Renato started out as a simple blogger and photographer, taking photos purely for enjoyment, but the moment his photos caught the eye of the people of Albay, he soon became the region’s ambassador, hence, the nickname “Bicolano Man.”

Renato promoted everything Magayon: from its beautiful destinations, warm people, rich culture and tradition, and among others, he took pride in the all the delectable and flavorful dishes that originated from the region.

He willingly gave tours around the province and has gone to represent the region in numerous trade events, bringing pride to his hometown. It’s been said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and true enough, Bicol dishes and delicacies have been gaining traction through Renato’s beautifully shot photographs.

According to him, their region’s best dishes have a rich history and, in one way or another, tell Bicolanos’ way of life.

His photographs of the beautiful Albay have been featured in various travel magazines and reading supplements, and he effectively use the power of social media to put the spotlight on the province’s tourism. In April 2016, Albay received twin accolades—the National Cultural Treasure and the UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Reserve.

Through Renato’s tourism efforts, he contributed to the growing numbers of foot traffic in Bicol region, and most importantly, inspired his fellow Magayons to take pride in their province.
