Miku Ebueza: Binding La Union’s Community for a Greater Purpose

for the Best pinoy advocate category

"We really want to make sure it's eco-friendly. We can't give back to the surf community if hindi eco-friendly."

Who would have thought that what started out as a hobby could pave the way for others to uplift their condition in life?

Bounded by their love for the sea, couple Miku and Mandy Ebueza found their calling in San Juan, La Union.

Recognizing the growing environmental ocean problems, the two set up a social enterprise which they called Rope of the North or Tali Ti Amianan in Ilocano.

The surfer-run enterprise aims to provide livelihood to the locals in San Juan by doing a profitable leisure activity that will benefit them and the environment.

From a team of two, Tali ti Amianan expanded as more orders from here and abroad came, which eventually led them to doing sustainable livelihood programs in the inner barangays of the municipality through the help of the local government.

After giving classes on how to make the eco-friendly, local, and handmade accessories, they hired a few who can be regular Tali weavers; to date, they have 10 locals, mostly surfers, elders, and women of San Juan, who help out with the production.

It is through the advocacy of the dynamic duo that locals found a way to improve their lives, and at the same time, create awareness to protect the sea.
