Mayon Volcano

for the Best Mountains & Volcanoes category

Mt. Mayon (Mayon Volcano) was declared the very first national park in the Philippines in the 20th of July, year 1938. It was later reclassified as a natural park in the year 2000 and renamed as the ‘Mayon Volcano Natural Park’. This active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol Region holds a significant place in history because of its destructive eruption way back 1814. In February 1, during what was considered as one of the world’s “most destructive eruptions”, around 1500 people perished and several towns were turned into ashes. Today, Mayon Volcano stands (2,463m) above sea level and its perfect cone shape attracts visitors around the world.

Things to do

Tourists and locals can go to the famous Cagsawa Church, better known as the ‘Cagsawa Ruins’, where they could instantaneously tell how the 1814 eruption buried structures down to 9 m deep. Climbing the active volcano is also possible with the most ideal March-May schedules. The safest approach is from the northwestern slope and would take 4 days to and fro its summit. Go to a personalized ATV adventure around the foot of Mt. Mayon. One will be able to see the riverside, lava-front, and a helipad. Other trails also lead to the summit.

Nearby places

After exploring Mt. Mayon, one can also opt to visit Busay Falls for a quick refreshing waterfall swim, Albay Park and Wildlife for the kids, and Daraga Church to complete the cultural immersion for visitors.

The Mayon Volcano Lava Trail is a very exciting yet safe activity to do with the family. You have to drive at least an hour via ATV through creeks, rough roads, rocks and dirt, yet, you can still feel safe while doing these with the aid of tour guide. A short climb to the Lava Wall and you can feel the calmness and majestic presence of the Mayon Volcano. -Tony Villanueva
