Banaue Rice Terraces

for the Best Mountains & Volcanoes category

Banaue Rice Terraces is a 2,000-year-old landscape etched on mountainsides by the ethnic group of Ifugao. For thousands of years, generation after generation, this minority group has passed on their agricultural knowledge that has now produced vast lands of cultural landscapes. The ‘Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe” is fed by an ancient irrigation system that is coming from the rainforest above the mountain.

Things to do

It is best to walk through the narrow steps of the terraces where one could see near what hard work went into the cultural landscape. The indigenous people of Aetas are everywhere, take a photo with them, know their story, and offer your words of gratitude for their given time.

Nearby places

Once in the Cordillera Region, other mountains are accessible via vans or jeepneys. One can go to Sagada and Mt. Kupapey in Mountain Province where a panoramic view of the Maligcong Rice Terraces awaits. Also visit a nearby waterfall in Batad Rice Terraces and dip in its freezing waters.

User Comments

The Banaue Rice Terraces does not only manifest how God truly loves His people by giving us such marvelous creations but it also reflects the true culture of the Ifugaos and the Filipinos in general. How the people till the land and create staircase-like rice fields will really prove that our people are hardworking and industrious. - Tony Villanueva
