El Nido

for the Best Islands & Beaches category

History & Location

El Nido is situated along the Bacuit Bay, northeast of Palawan’s capital Puerto Princesa. Its name is derived from the Spanish word ‘nido’ meaning ‘nest’ which is the main ingredient for the gourmet nido soup. Apparently, edible nests are sourced from El Nido and are sold for thousands of dollars abroad.

The island is known for its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and limestone cliffs. One may opt to hike the Taraw Cliff where a bird’s eye view of the island can be found. Also, 40 minutes away from the town proper is a natural spa found in the Makinit Hot Springs.

Nearby places include the islands of Coron in the north where underwater life is teeming. Down south, we find Palawan’s capital, the Puerto Princesa where the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is found.
